Here's some concept art showing Sam and Gilly approaching the Wall from the North, exclusively at io9. It shows the scale and the magnificence of the Wall — and how daunting it is to climb. This comes from the book Inside HBO's Game of Thrones, and we've also got an exclusive look at the Wildling's costume designs.
The new volume of Inside HBO's Game of Thrones covers seasons three and four, and you can get it at the HBO Store or Amazon. It reveals "what it takes to translate George R. R. Martin's bestselling series into a wildly popular television series. With unprecedented scope and depth, it showcases hundreds of unpublished set photos, visual effects art, and production and costume designs, plus insights from key actors and crew members that capture the best scripted and unscripted moments from Seasons 3 and 4."
Here's a two-page spread from the book, explaining what went into designing the Wildlings' costumes — including some paintings of creatures beyond the Wall, similar to cave paintings. If you look carefully at the Wildlings in some scenes, you might see some pictures of "mammoths and other creatures that roam the icy lands."
Also, you might not have realized just how heavy these costumes are — the jackets weigh between eight and 17 pounds, and that's before shells and bones are added. A lot of thought went into making these costumes and weapons things the Wildlings could find in the frozen North. See for yourself, and click to embiggen:
