What the @#$% is going on with the new Gatchaman animeGatchaman Crowds is a recently announced anime series, clearly based somewhat on the classic Science Ninja Team Gatchaman, better known in the U.S. as Battle of the Planets. Both series features teens fighting against evil aliens in special suits, and both series are animated by Studio Tatsunoko. So why does Gatchaman Crowds fill me with cold nerd rage?

Here's the summary of Crowds as per Anime News Network:

The story of Gatchaman Crowds is set in Japan in the early summer of 2015. 180,000 people live in Tachikawa City, the "second metropolis" of the Tokyo area. Among them are Gatchaman warriors who fight in special reinforced suits powered by "NOTE," the manifestation of special spiritual powers in living beings. A council has scouted a group of individuals with latent powers to protect Earth from alien criminals. In recent years, the council has assigned Gatchaman warriors to deal with the mysterious entity known as "MESS."

Why do I hate this? Is it the idea that these kids have special powers and aren't just ninjas with science skills? That seems pretty silly, especially since the original Gatchaman piloted crazy ships that transformed. Is it because the protagonist seems to be a cookie-cutter spunky 16-year-old schoolgirl, like in 85% of all other anime? Maybe, but that sounds kind of sexist when you write it out like that. Is it the fact it seems like there are more than five members? Maybe, but again, that's pretty esoteric.

I'm going to decide my instant, powerful loathing of this series is based entirely on the fact that they're not wearing bird-themed costumes. It may be phenomenally silly, but it's all I've got for the moment.

Okay, that and there appears to be an 8-year-old in a string bikini on the lower right. I definitely hate that, too.
