Science fiction and fantasy books are bigger than ever. A Dance With Dragons and Stephen King's time-travel saga rule the bestseller lists. Literary authors all flock to write about zombies, apocalypses and time travel. And by all indications, 2012 is going to be an even greater year for genre books. More »

William Gibson is one of our finest science fiction authors, because he knows that people are the strangest products science has ever produced. And his new essay collection, Distrust That Particular Flavor, gives us insight into how he came to understand that so well, when many other SF authors struggle to see it. More »

The year's hit movies, bestselling books and buzzed-about television shows were dominated by genre fare — and a handful of people played a key part in making it happen. More »

You know Paolo Bacigalupi's arrived when his next novel is already getting raves and nobody's even seen a galley yet. Over at Westword, Alan Prendergast talks about the excitement about Bacigalupi's forthcoming The Drowned Cities, which takes place in the Ship Breaker world but isn't a direct sequel. Chief among those banging the drum for the next Bacigalupi book: Time's Lev Grossman, who's also hyped for the next William Gibson book. (Sorry about the misunderstanding: It's not a novel, it's a non-fiction collection.) More »

Rudy Rucker was the first author to win the Philip K. Dick Award, right after Dick's death in 1982. Around that time, Rucker was becoming aware of the new "Cyberpunk" movement and meeting the rebellious authors who were reimagining the union of humans and computers. In this exclusive excerpt from Rucker's new autobiography, Nested Scrolls, he talks about how both events influenced his writing, and what it was like to be a science fiction writer in those strange days. <a href="http://io9.com/5865721/the-death-of-philip-k-dick-and-the-birth-of-cyberpunk" title="Click here to read more about The Death of Philip K. People have been trying to make a movie of William Gibson's Neuromancer since the mid-1980s, and now Splice/Cube director Vincenzo Natali is trying to make it happen. But for a few years, Joseph Kahn, the director of tons of music videos plus Torque and Detention, was hard at work on a Neuromancer film. More »

This month, many of us are trying to pound out a novel. The ultimate dream is to break into the publishing world with a debut that makes people sit up and take notice. And there's some good news on that front — some of science fiction and fantasy's most beloved writers have made a splash with their very first published novels. More »

There's a must-read interview with William Gibson over at the Paris Review, in which he explains what was wrong with cyberpunk: "A snappy label and a manifesto would have been two of the very last things on my own career want list. That label enabled mainstream science fiction to safely assimilate our dissident influence, such as it was. Cyberpunk could then be embraced and given prizes and patted on the head, and genre science fiction could continue unchanged." He goes on to explain that science fiction, in the twentieth century, was too triumphalist and focused on a white American future, and lacked real details to go with its shiny ideas. "I wanted to see dirt in the corners," says Gibson. More »

A few visionary authors have managed to make such an impression that they left the world a vastly different place. More »

Few musicians have been as science fictional, for as long, as William "Bootsy" Collins. He's been the cartoon character at the heart of George Clinton's UFO-inspired Mothership. He's helped Buckethead construct a giant robot. If you want to show your love for William Gibson's classic cyberpunk novel Neuromancer, then there's no better way than with this incredible "Wintermute Recordings" tee from UK outfit The Affair. Yes it's a bit pricey at $43, but it's so gorgeous I'd be willing to consider shelling out for it. Plus, The Affair has a handful of other lovely literary reference shirts for fans of Kurt Vonnegut, H.P. Lovecraft, and more. You can grab this Wintermute tee here, or search through The Affair's other offerings. More »

It's probably too late to stop our world from turning into a dystopia. But that doesn't mean you can't nudge society towards one type of dystopia or another. To help you decide which kind you'd prefer, Flavorwire has a hilarious quiz. Options include the dehumanizing futures of Vonnegut or Rand, a breed-then-die future like Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale, or a Canticle For Leibowitz-style wasteland. Best figure out your ideal future dystopia — before someone else chooses for you!
