Don't forget 1936's "Deluge," which was famously lost for over 60 years. The plot: there's an eclipse, which causes earthquakes, hurricanes, floods, etc.--'cause that ALWAYS happens when there's an eclipse. Anyway, there's a 4 minute flooding of NYC sequence where the statue gets slammed by waves until it gives up. The movie did well, then all the prints were accidentally destroyed. Film scholars searched for decades for it, until Forrest J. Ackerman (editor of Famous Monsters of Filmland) found a copy in an Italian film archive. The catch? It had been dubbed into Italian, so even though it was a Hollywood movie, if you rent it from Nextflix, it has English subtitles!
