I'm reading the Atrocity Archives right now! His characters' struggles with gender roles in the books I read before this (Accelerando and Iron Sunrise) are interesting - but hey, so is the sex. I find the romantic relationships the protagonists wind up entangled in - and yes, it usually seems to be a rather passive process - occasionally baffling, but at least not eye-rollingly dumb or predictable or offensive.

Crash Launching

In the middle of Iron Sunrise right now... had trouble following it in the beginning but it's all coming together.

engtech

@emilia: Well in Stross' novel Glasshouse, they literally change sex at the molecular level. Then they struggle with gender roles. So it's both.

Annalee Newitz

Actually in a sense we gender sex. Specific physical attributes become identified with a particular gender even though such attributes may not be 100% associated with a specific gender.

But that isn't related to my first statement where sex is used uncritically as a synonym to gender.

Emilia

You said that you were going to talk about sex, but focused more on gender. Why?

I feel that there is too much laziness in how sex and gender are used.

Emilia
