Witchblade is definitely sci fi (or at least as sci fi as any other alien-based comic property). The Witchblade show in question sounds like the relatively-new Witchblade anime series. I've watched a few episodes and it's not bad.

Wikipedia describes it as such:

In this new approach to the Witchblade universe, the lead character (and blade wielder) is Masane Amaha, a kind-hearted woman who, despite her good intentions, is fairly clumsy and not good around the house. She lost her memory during a catastrophical unknown event that ravaged Tokyo and, curiously, Masane was found unscathed in the phenomenon's ground zero, holding a baby in her arms. Six years later, she returns to Tokyo with the child, now called Rihoko, and for whom she cares as a daughter, where she discovers that the mysterious jewel attached to her right wrist is actually the legendary artifact known as the Witchblade. Since then Masane got herself involved in the struggle for power between a huge corporation and a government agency, while trying to live her life peacefully with her daughter.

Sounds like it at least has the potential to be sci-fi. I don't have IFC, so I can't check for sure.

I've watched about half of the first season of The Universe and I have to say I'm only half impressed...
on the one hand the info and the visuals are pretty good...but jebus - the DRAMA that is injected into this show is so offensive, at least to me...and the need to recap after the break...sheesh...
I hope one day there will be a series like this in the manner of Blue Planet or Planet Earth...no chatting scientists, no anthropomorphism (oooOOOooo the Sun is angry!)
the subject matter alone is compelling enough...
...sigh...
