The conspiracy stuff was the POINT of the X-files. I hated the One-0ffs. That Monster of the Week stuff was the worst. The Conspiracy mythos gave the show it's powerful sustained creepiness that kept it going. The best side-story was Jose Chung's From Outer Space.

I stopped watching the show reqularly somewhere in the... can't remember which season. I typically enjoy epic, continuous, conspiratorial story lines, but life just got too hectic at the time to keep up. Always meant to go back and watch the whole show though.

Best thing about the show was the character interaction, writing and messed up stories (a good thing in this case).

Hope this is good.

(Spoiler alert for those who haven't finished the series.)

I'm curious how they're going to deal with Mulder and Scully's status as essentially fugitives. The show ended with them escaping attack helicopters and going on the run. Mulder was sentanced to death for the "murder" of a super soldier, and neither of them, under these circumstances, is probably too welcome at the FBI. Are they just investigating these things on their own now for fun? Or will there be some hook that gets them back into the bureau?

I kind of liked the conspiracy stuff, but it got to a point where I started to feel that they had no cohesive story that they were actually sticking to and were just making it up on a season to season basis. That is one thing I like about lost is they have the story planned out and actually know where they are going with it.

I think that he meant "stupid religious bullshit". It's what made the series go downhill for me. They practically ended the series once Mulder discovered the conspiracy. At that point is when a christian religion (Catholic) is weaved into the show, over and over again. It's hard to watch the show at that point because every other episode is religious.

I too heard that Chris was going to leave Aliens out of it, and it's supposedly more of a return to the horror/unexplained kind of stuff. I'll love it I'm sure, as long as he leaves the stupid religious bullshit out of the series.

Resist or Serve was pretty decent, but I got stuck in one place and never played the game again (I am terrible at video games). As a huge fan, I'm really excited for this movie, and while yes, I would've liked the show to end with that marvelous back-tracking shot of Mulder and Scully kissing (with William between them), it's up there with the greatest shows of all time, and many of the episodes are timelss. A little scared about the casting of Xzibit though...

OK, so it's a one off but what will be the mystery? Cryptocreature? Icky mutant? Urban legend?

I always liked the icky mutant episodes and Urban legends myself. The Cryptocreatures were never really all that interesting and could easily turn into Lake Placid, or a sci-fi Saturday feature (Giant scorpions! Giant Snakes! Giant mummies!)

@Falconfire: Yeah killing the Loan Gunmen was one of the stupidest stunts they pulled the entire shoes run wasnt it. Never mind the fact their own series never had a shot thanks to 9/11 and being pre-emptied and moved every damn week, the characters themselves would have made excellent movie fodder.

It felt like a last shot at tugging at heartstrings, something that was woefully unneeded.

I liked the mythology and CSM was by far my favorite character. However, given that the episodes that comprise it take up 4 DVD sets, I can see where a one-off is a way better plan, especially given the fifteen or so years since the show started. On that note, Mulder and Scully both look great.

The conspiracy/alien mythos couldn't be sustained after the first two years. The plots became stupid and pointless just to maintain a mystery. I'm glad their doing a one-off, which I thought were the only episodes worth watching.

I think they needed to wait to get the bad taste of season 9 (which I didn't watch. My X-Files ends very nicely with kissing, a baby, and the Lone Gunmen alive and well!) out of everyone's mouths.

Its a one off. If you read the article he says they are getting away from the hardcore mythos which he knew turned people off to the show in the end and focusing on a movie like the one off episodes they did.

Personally I think this is a very smart move. Its been 6 years since the ending, people who where teens when the show started are now married possibly with kids almost the same age as they where. Not to mention the alien plotline toward the end got stupidly convoluted being re-written yearly to cover the main cast leaving and coming back.

And face the facts, some of the best episodes of the show had nothing to do with the conspiracy.
