There was a little "making of" docu that said that he producers (?) wanted to do a Holocaust film, but some other network was doing one, so they massaged it into what is _V_, and true or not, the parallels are pretty obvious (the grandparents point it out, for example).

The other miniseries and especially the series are easily skipped, though.

I also saw somewhere recently that there is talk of a _V_ remake.

Taed

i recall an earlier post about taking crappy movies as the basis for reimaging. buffy the vampire slayer would be the perfect example. a forgettable movie, but a superior tv series.

as far as reimaging, with some of the directors today, and effects possibilities i vote for anything HP Lovecraft came up with.

sabalon

Evening All! "Smallville" (01), "Lois & Clark (93), "Superboy" (88)...
Had a couple thoughts earlier, but in doing some research for this post this caught my eye; "Hercules: The Legendary Journeys" (95) {which with the huge marketing numbers it pulled down from its get-go led to} - "Xena" (95), "The Adventures of Sinbad" (96), "Beastmaster" (99), "Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's The Lost World" (99), and there are others that escape me just now. Wasn't there some jungle show with a blond chick in the lead? about the same time as these??
Something with a close feel was "The Secret Adventures of Jules Verne" (00).
"Mutant X", "Earth: Final Conflict", "Andromeda". Okay.
Even Network-grade shows can fail if they break the rules, and if an Independant sticks to its vision it'll last. What rules, you ask? What do "Moonlighting" and "Lois & Clark" have in common?
There was "My Secret Identity" and later came some show that had a girl who could turn into a liquid. Any takers?
"Voyagers" and "Friday the 13th: The Series" and others could have gone alot further... if they had had more support.
And that is the whole vein of this post. How much vision can a concept have. And how much MONEY to cover all the bases. So, from all of you, INPO, I aggree about a live-action "Cowboy Bebop". An "Elektra" ala 'sincity'? Cool. For me, tops of my list were "Logan's Run", "Space:1999" {reworked of course around a moon of Saturn maybe}, "The Prisoner", "Lost in Space", "Jonny Quest {either Ani. or L/A}, "Land of the Lost", "Ark II", "Dungeons & Dragons" {also Ani. or L/A}, and "The Fantastic Journey". Special thoughts are given to "Reboot"!!!
Fine. A friend keeps mentioning "Land of the Giants". Go figure.
OPPPSSS! Missed noting "Thundarr the Barbarian"! As a L/A, either Musetta Vander (5'8") or Kelly Hu (5'5") {I mean come on she is HOT in "The Scorpion King"} really does it for me. Or for someone a little younger Zhang Zi-Yi (5'5").
And lastly, for something new, how about doing the game 'Car Wars' as a L/A? Anyone? Enjoy.

minion_of_solitude

Why do we have to have "re-imaginings" in the first place? Can't we make NEW sci fi shows/movies/stories? Is Hollywood so tapped out that no one can think of anything new?

Studios can't figure out why Hollywood is losing money? It's because there doesn't seem to be anyone who can create a new story of ANY kind, sci fi or otherwise.

Come on, folks. Instead of dreaming of a re-done whatever how 'bout we convince Hollywood to give us something new for a change?

MadMonica

I agree with MattClary. Star Wars is in need of a serious redoing. The reason is simplel. George Lucas did such a lousy job of remembering what made the original trilogy great, never mind the continuity issues, that the critics of the prequel trilogy are absolutely right when they describe as seeming to belong to a different movie series entirely. As such, I would redo that serious entirely, including with the material that George Lucas cut out of the first three movies entirely. When one combines this with a heavy type rewriting of the three prequel movies you can see how this would be improved immediately.

thischap

I know it;s fairly rescent but the vertigo comic Y the last man as a tv series would be terriffic. It is a truly interesting piece and touches on sexual themes in a not often seen way. A tv series reminisecent of invasion of the body snatchers would be cool, but more conspiracy oriented with similairities to the faculty. dark angel needs to be redone or continued in some form. Andromeda also should get re-invented, this time as pure sci-fi, minus the mystical aspects. quantum leap could be interesting. Even the twilight zone. A late 90's sci-fi called deep water black sounded interesting. with the right cast, it could work. I, Robot as a tv series could be comparable to battlestar galactica if done right. just afew suggestions. being a huge comic fan I would like comic series Aphrodite IX and the ivisibles adapted for the small or big screen though the new Eliza Dushku vehicle Dollhouse seems to borrow heavily from Aphrodite in concept.

amestris

@tallcat601: I agree, Firefly was perfect, no reboot required. Only thing that could make it better is MORE EPISODES. Bring EVERYONE back, give them a nice fat budget, and let em rip.

@Moff: Very true, Thundarr was the best of the era, at least until Robotech came on in '84, which totally blew me away (whoa... people DIED! what! continious storyline?!?). I would RACE home from high school to catch it. Unfortunately, watching Robotech now is a bit of a mixed bag. Minmay has NOT gotten any less annoying, but many of the episodes (and cerainly the story arc) hold up very well.

A Deepness in the Sky is awesome, every bit as wonderful and memorable as Fire Upon the Deep. You also get the REAL Pham Nuwen in the depths of the Qeng Ho. Qiwi is a cool character cought in the midst of the far out proceedings. You simply cannot top Vernor Vinge in these two books for hard-core, deep-future space opera. I only wish he wrote more.

Pham_Nuwen

@Moff: ha ha, someone got the screen name, you're the first... although there is a Linux blogger out there who named one of his PC's Pham Nuwen and another Qiwi. Presuming you've read the refence, that should ring a bell too.

Yeah, when I first saw Lost it actually reminded me of Hyperion, especially the story structure/development, some of the themes, and the way the themes intertwine.

Of course, I doubt the LOST creators read Hyperion... the easier explanation is that both LOST and Hyperion have an endless number of "Literary" references and riffs, which gives them a strange but probably coincidental parallellity (ok, that's not a real word).

Also, THUNDARR definitely needs to be brought back. Did you know it was made by the art/creative team that made the golden era Scooby Doo episodes? Incidentally, there is a petition going to get it out on DVD, but don't hold your breath.

Pham_Nuwen

@Pham_Nuwen: (Nice screen name.) I would love to see the Hyperion books as a four-season series. It would work pretty well, too -- the books are plenty cinematic but solid on ideas. The first novel in particular, with the various tales, would lend itself well to a season of Lost-style flashbacks.

Also: Yes, I think a Thundarr revival would be great. That's the one cartoon I loved as a three-year-old that more than holds up to present-day viewing. Someone needs to get that out on DVD, stat.

And if the Sci Fi Channel really wanted to delight me, they'd turn the Deathstalker novels into a series. Those are some terrible, terrible books that are so wonderful, wonderful to read. They're corny and formulaic and outperform even Dragonball Z in terms of introducing one MOST POWERFUL FORCE IN THE UNIVERSE after another...but as schlock goes, they're at the top of the pyramid. Anyone who liked the guilty-pleasure readability of David Eddings' Belgariad and other series but who wished those books wouldn't take themselves so seriously and who appreciates supporting characters regularly offing themselves because "the future is just too awful to stick around for" should check 'em out.

Moff

I think yerall thinking too small. How about "The Starlost" With new CGI effects a hundred-mile-wide-ship on a collision course with a black hole would be cake. Besides it would give Walter Koenig (The Alien Oro) something to do since he did such a great job as "Bester" the psi cop in Bab5. Starlost is a renaming of "Pheonix from the Ashes" by Harlan Ellison and would have been great if the technology had been there at the time rather than using egg-crate-foam on the walls and furniture of all the sets.

Xanthur
