When you see white men at the top, you assume all white men share in the spoils. To categorize based on race, gender, sexual-preference, whatever, simply clouds the real issue which we should all be driving at, the empowerment of the individual. As for "call(ing) out the perpetrators on their attitudes and work to change the status quo", you are ultimately doing more for equality by being competent at your job than calling anyone out. Not to suggest that you shouldn't point out inequities but you'll get farther being known for the former than the latter. Also congratulations on working in the tech field, so do I and I don't doubt you've put up with your share of crap. I work for a woman, and she works for woman and we all get crapped on by the same people and we all share an attitude of being in it together. In Nebris' world it shouldn't be possible for men and women to make common cause, yet here we are. Undoubtedly you have this sort of relationship with at least a few of the men you work with?

Also to clarify flawed and unfixable as the human condition, I agree, we should strive to perfect ourselves, but creating labels in order rail against another group of individuals, doesn't lead to perfection of yourselves. Women are as guilty of greed, jealousy and the rest of the seven deadly sins as men. My take is that Nebris is suggesting otherwise, that human strength/weaknesses is somehow gender specific and I don't think history supports that.

I'm also a lot closer to 40 than 30. I'm married to a woman (who is better educated and makes more $$ than I). I derive a great deal of my personal philosophy from a woman, and am ultimately responsible for the care and feeding of a future empowered woman. I have no interest in the status quo.

The disillusioned professor has had to put up with just as much sexist shit in her career as the doctor, lawyer, or engineer. In fact, in some cases, it's even worse, because academic sexism can be swathed in layers of "science" or "tradition." Don't discount the realities of sexism in every field--there is no ivory tower.

Is that also the solution for black people who face discrimination - to act more white? And should gay people act more straight, so that they can get ahead in a biased system?

As a woman who's already been subjected to discrimination in the tech field, my method of being aggressive and kicking ass is to call out the perpetrators on their attitudes and work to change the status quo, so that other women, maybe even my own daughter, won't have to face as much of it in their own lives. That's not whining for men to get out of my way. That's proving I can do my job and be a woman at the same time, and not have to apologize for it.

As for the "inherently flawed" argument - sure, we are. That doesn't mean we should stop trying to improve ourselves and the world around us. I am very thankful and proud to live in a culture where I can achieve what I want to - and much of that gratitude is to the women and men who came before me who fought to make my way easier. I'm trying to do the same for those who come after me.

Going back to the original issue of the movie itself - if nothing else, it also seems to be a satire and commentary on the recent spate of "torture-porn" flicks that tend to feature the sexualized destruction of women more than anything else. It's not only an opportunity to examine gender roles in our society, but also how they traditionally play out on our movie screens.

I did have a very visual reaction to your male hit piece. I was in fact enjoying your disassembly of the hapless Spud, but reading your anti-male essay left me a bit disappointed.

Look, you've obviously read a lot of books, but for all your education, your rational is remarkably simplistic. Group A has all these bad traits, group B has all these good ones. Group A, through backhanded dealings and general skullduggery, has long oppressed group B, who's noble idealism could make the world better place, if only they were given the chance. Therefore, the only answer is the complete annihilation of group A, so group B can take us to the next level of human enlightenment. Only it never works out that way does it? In the end you get oppression, violence, destruction, and chaos. Not because of "male egotism" (as if the trait were based on gender!) because your not really interested in equality, fairness, or making the world a better place, your interested in revenge.

"I say if you want to change the outcome, you have to change the equation..." You don't get to change the equation, humankind is flawed and unfixable. In fact it is the assumption that we can be "fixed" that leads to the oppression, violence, etc. Name the historical bogyman and I promise you this is exactly the rational they had when starting out. This is precisely why capitalism and democracy (flawed as they are) continue to provide the best for the most. Neither requires humankind to be "fixed", both put the ultimate responsibility for making the world a better place precisely where it belongs, on the individual, but I digress.

A self-confident woman wouldn't sit around complaining about men keeping them down. They don't imagine a world without men as being perfect. They get aggressive, toughen up and play with the boys. My suggestion to you is you stop listening to that disillusioned professor and find a doctor, lawyer, or engineer who has had to deal with male chauvinism in the real world, and how they dealt with it. Find a woman who's at the top of her game and ask her how much time she spent wishing men would get out of her way and how much time she spent getting aggressive and kicking their asses.

The researchers asked men and women about relative pay raises. Basically, "Would you accept a 50% pay raise if it meant that a fellow worker got a 75% pay raise?" Refusing the raise meant the fellow worker didn't get a raise either.

Almost every man said they would refuse the raise, while nearly every woman said she would accept the raise.

So men would rather suffer than see 'the other guy' get ahead while women will work with what the have.

But what was really interesting was that when this study was reported in the MSM, it overlooked the male/female dichotomy and essentially stated that all humans are selfish to the point of self destruction.

So, I put it to you, O' First Man of Greece, what is your solution to the problems of the species? Do you even have any? Or are you just another monkey flinging shit through the bars of his cage?

Now in the case of people I know on the nice guy syndrome. What actually happens is not an attempt to decive or use passiv/aggressive tactics but an attempt to guage the feelings of women. Because women rarely say or do anything (in regards to dating) that is declarative, in regards to their feelings I myself spend time attempting to use repeated observations of behavior to overcome possible observer bias. Why? So as not to offend them since I actually care how they feel. Unfortunately, womens body language is Ambiguous and I find it difficult to interpret. Possible mild version of Apergers perhaps. The relationships have ended by 1)Money I was too poor for her and to this day she call a saint. 2)Died in a car Accident. 3) Decided out of the Blue 6months into it we weren't right for each other( Why she couldn't listen to me when i tried to talk her out of it in the first place using that very reasoning I'll never know) Said I did nothing wrong. Got mad at me for calling her beautiful. Was a slight difficulty seeing her regularly because of my work schedule. Not my fault and if she had waited 2 more months like I said I would have had a compatible work schedule. Hated reality TV though a connection perhaps? We're still friends though.

Fine. True story time.Friend of mine hadn't got laid in a while, got the advice to be a dick while he was on a date. Used the stfu line on her. Got laid that night. A year or so later when he began to go out again he just tried to be himself, and had a hell of a time while the ladies stole money from him, a jacket, one came on to me and another one would've if I hadn't made myself scarce. The inital review said something about Rape, pain and fear being a part of the typical teenage sexual awakening and I responded to that first going to primary causes of why a typical female sexual awakening might be so traumatic. It needen't be if one is careful and sensitve and willing to go slowly.(Not do it all at once but over a couple of days perhaps or even weeks to keep damage minimal) I freely admit to going about the discussion backwards but I am convinced to have the proper way of things, and to have proven my point.

I am not trying to pick on you but I think it must be a vast oversimplification to say that your relationships didn't work out because you were "too nice". First, niceness is a strategy of social interaction, not evidence of innate goodness. Second, niceness isn't (and shouldn't be) the only criteria for interpersonal relationships.

Sex, romantic relationships, friendship, companionship are not rewards for being nice. Nice or not, not no one is entitled to the above. You may want them. They may make you happy. But I don't believe anyone is entitled to them. This is a pet peeve of mine, having come up against this attitude before. Luckily humans are social creatures, so if you really want them it is likely you'll get them in some form or another. Niceness returned should be the only expected reward for being nice.

Aside: The etymology of 'nice' is fascinating. It's had more meanings than almost any other word. It's first documented meaning is unknowing, which then became ignorant, etc... (No lie! I researched it in college.) That's part of why the connotation has never been positive.

Um no it doesn't. They are filling a perceived need , and their message is exactly as I'm telling you. Nice guys finish last. That is being told over and over again. Magnolia was based on a fellow named Ross Jeffries who has a site, a series of seminars, and a series of books called speed seduction. They have, as a large part of their instruction the advice against being the Nice Guy. And it goes on. I saw a book that Stop being Mr. Nice Guy. a few years back. There are advertisements all throughout the web that have this very advice. It's trying to meet a need a lot of men have about being the nice guy friend trying to commiserate a woman about her jerk boyfriend or even a string of jerk boyfriends. And I wasn't "siting" Steve Gutenberg as a source but as a method of finding info on the film. Mystery talks about being a "nice guy" and how one has to discard these things. This is so very much common knowledge.

When we see him in the scene with his father on his deathbed, he's regressed completely to his twelve year old self and his crying is a mixture of genuine grief with selfhatred at the fact he's become the very person he loathed; his father.

Oh, that movie sounds just delicious. Not only have I posted part of this review on my blog, but I have also alerted lots of people to the existence of this movie. I regret the lack of popular products that develop metaphors for female experiences, compared with the wealth of such products for men. The excellent (if awfully written) I am Legend novella, which I have been getting my knickers all wet over last week (haven't seen the movie. It can't be as good, can it?), can serve as an example. I used to love (hell, I still do) Buffythevampireslayer for exactly that reason. Plus, vast parts of the first 3 seasons were very well written. where was I?
ah yes. Joy and anticipation and gratitude for posting this review.

the fact that women deliberately select against the nice guy is so common that it is the subjects of numerous books, websites and even movies. It was a large part of Magnolia and Steve Gutenberg had a video cheapie in the 90's call Nice Guys Sleep Alone. Plus, there's that vh1 show with that guy named Mystery. I wonder however if this self selection is a consequence of a Capitalist society. When the overriding societal mechanism is competition( as aopposed to cooperation) is Sociopathic behavior a better earmark for success? Is that the reason women often pursue such men? I want to see these arguments against my ideas you claim to have. These have merely been personal attacks against my supposed failings.

Actually, I think much of the outrage that has been sparked over the fact that I am apparently going after a sacred cow. Misandry is currently highly common and most people don't even see it. One of the manifestations of misandry is the attraction to the "bad boy" it is every bit as damaging of a dichotomy as the madonna/whore syndrome is to women. It is a destructive culural meme that I am attempting to debate. The issue of self-selection is contentious as many people see it as a sort of blame the victim mentality. But, sexuality is complex and the truth is rarely straightforward. But, as I stated earlier it is Society that fuels my outrage not women, I have also stated in no uncertain terms that sexual assault is unnacceptable, but one should take sensible precautions, and selecting away from the jock and the Bad Boy are the beginnings, as is being very clear of each others intentions are a must.

I haven't been arguing and I'm not merely looking for a fight anyway. I take issue with the gleeful representaion of sexual mutilation, and I would have the same reaction if the film had the reverse gender. Now my take was on the concept stated about womens sexual awakenings and how, very often women to an extent self-select the sort of men who are most likely to commit such acts based on misleading concepts in the media and their own desire to obtain status by the reflected "power" that such men portray. I used a couple of poorly chosen words and conceded the poor choice. ( Use of feminist when the proper word for to use was misandrist). Since when does a troll concede a point?

WoW! This is a weird comment convo. Let us not forget that 50% of all women have been assualted and or molseted in their lifetime. Being a man trying to make women out to be the enemy is pretty freakin difficult under those statistical circumstances.

A movie about a average, non violent girl being assaulted by some bad men but having the ability to fight back is intriguing. What if all women had this ability? I bet the entire structure of scoiety would be drastically altered. Men would no longer be in the power position to simply take what they want.

Lunanoir you are likely correct that a vagina dentata would cut down or eliminate sexual assault. The truth is men should ask VERY SPECIFIC questions when it comes to intimate moments with women. And yes stop when told to stop. Women for their part should be more straightforward and open about their desires as well, and have a frank and honest discussion with the men they are planning an intimate moment as well. My point on this post has been to what sounds like a rather crude and gleeful mutilation fantasy .
