I had to vote for Dune. Nothing can replace the uniqueness of David Lynch's one true masterpiece in my mind. It's got everything. Picard knife fighting in a forcefield-suit. Sting's crotch playing a part so important it should have been given a screen credit.

The stupidest idea for a weapon ever in the history of "how the fuck did the actors ever keep their faces straight" cinema.

More movies that Hollywood will almost certainly rape for money? Evil Dead trilogy. Flight of the Navigator. Star Wars (Oh wait, too late). Lawrence of Arabia (not sci-fi, but just wait; it'll be set in Gulf War 1, where instead of the British fucking the Bedouin, it's the Americans fucking the Shia!)

Escape from New York... really? They're really remaking it? How? Why? Just the landing on the World Trade Center roof makes it impossible to do without either breaking the plot or sticking flags in our eyes.

antipaganda

@El Bandito- I agree. Sin City was a brilliant adaptation of a static visual medium. Barbarella should be right up his alley. In fact, I think he could improve the original by updating that lame-ass dialogue. Rodriguez is perfect for Barbarella.

MemphisBuddha

If they're going to remake 'Escape from New York' how about it being a mashup with 'Sex And The City'?

It'd be a great story: plane carrying a hetro guy who's never had his eyebrows done and doesn't like cocaine crash lands in the west village. He meets up with a chick who's never had a $3000 handbag and they have to escape a Manhattan populated with marauding gangs of hipsters, fashionistas and packs of rabid toy dogs.

...

Anyway, if someone wanted to remake "Lagan's Run" and actually stick with Nolan's original book series, it might be worth it. The 70's movie had to compress the world (and Mars adventure series) down to a domed city because of effects and budget. A modern version could easily handle a world-wide chase and escape to the Mars sanctuary.

steven522

I voted for (against) Keanu only because I do not have faith that either Hollywood nor Keanu can deliver anything better than what the original did. As for all the rest, the only one I have any faith in is Roland Emmerich. I would love to see Voyage done right; as the movie did not do Asimov's novel justice. And seriously, since when does Land of the Lost count as serious science fiction? I hated the show back in the day... the only reason why I would watch it now would be because of Will Ferrell.

shehanum

Half those movies shouldn't have been made in the first place, so there's nothing wrong with doing them again. Death Race, Escape from New Yawk, get the right macho lead guys and it's no problem. Barbarella needs to be campy and you can get Duran Duran to do the music.

Journey to the Center of the Earth is old enough to be in public domain, and while it may be hard to render the mood of the book well, maybe they can get the rights to Rick Wakeman's orchestral score and do some better special effects.
I'm fine with Keanu in Day the Earth Stood Still if they can do something appropriate and modern with the plot. (Robots. Lots of Robots. no...)

Dune's too deep and difficult to do in less than a miniseries or LOTR epic, but if you could grab enough of the modern global-warming concern for ecology and the Moslem-vs-Western world conflicts sensitively enough you could maybe find something of value to say that keeps some of the sixties/seventies zeitgeist, though nobody takes psychedelics these days. On the other hand, another cartoon about riding sandworms just wouldn't be worth it.

Somebody suggested doing Logan's Run. In the original Asimov story, people got killed off at sixty if they hadn't proven to be valuable to society, so you still get to kill off us boomers who were approaching the don't-trust-anyone-over-30 deadline of the previous movie. You can dump the silly religious cult bits from the original, and you'd have to lose the babes in diaphanous gowns, but it might work if you find something worth saying.

billstewart

Mostly just so I can actually see what's going on in the movie. Could Carpenter just not afford good lenses and filmstock or something back in the day?

When I was in High School, we had a once every four year, dual semester science fiction class. It was awesome.

We spent the first semester reading about three dozen short stories from things like Asimov's and OMNI, and we'd spend at least two days talking about each.

We spent the entire second semester simultaneously reading the novel and watching the movie Dune. I don't think a single person walked out of that class liking the movie, when compared to the book.

Anyway, that high school produced a hell of a lot of sci-fi fanatics, and it was probably because of that class, and the only teacher who taught it.

Naikrovek

If there was ever irrefutable proof that there is no intelligent life in Hollywood, this is it. The current stable of dimbulb wannabes in science fiction scripting decide NOT to try anything original, but instead to go back 'where everyone else has been before.'

Why not try making a brilliant Science Fiction comedy film out of Stanislaw Lem's CYBERIAD? Why not shoot for doing script of Corwainer Smith's NORSTRILIA? How about an attempt at doing Harry Harrison's DEATHWORLD?

This, I feel, is why Hollywood is ultimately doomed, and why indies like the Coen brothers are chipping away at the film trade. More power to them. Maybe someday we'll get a science fiction producer with the requisite imagination and gumption to strike out in some new directions...by moving FORWARD...

Hekkashesh

If a classic plot is redone well, and the movie being remade is old enough, I don't have much of a problem...Modern camera-work, set design, lighting, makeup, stunt-work, and special effects could really move the near-misses of yore into the spotlight of today. A lot of the old writing had substance, and a lot of movies only really failed to make an impact because they lacked the budget and capabilities that today's movies have. I know that the stationary cam pointing at a set hinders my own enjoyment of older movies, and I doubt I'm alone.

That said, remaking the top-of-the-chart blockbusters of yesteryear and modern Japanese horror flics is worthless; if there's already a good version of a movie, the new version is already forced to fight with its source material on top of its contemporary competition.

Balius

Yeah, I am all about a remake of Barbarella as well. That movie's overall is just so-so, but the scenes that stick out REALLY stick out... and Rodriguez will keep some of the cheese packed in. I am a little concerned about his love of ultra-violence, though. If only the great Russ Meyer hadn't passed on... there's a real director for barbarella!

I like "Chip Chillios" in Death Race, but agree making them prisoners takes some of the coolness out of it. Why can't we make movies today that are so outragous, why do they all have to be in the "this could really happen NOW!" vein?

I'm voting for day the earht stood still. there is no way in hell Hollywood can remake that without it being a total crap-fest. and probably making $350 million bank, too *cough, cough independence day cough, cough*

dirtybacon

Hate to say it but I think the Sci Fi channel despite the obvious ack of funds did about the best version of Dune we are going to see considering the size and scope of the book. The only way they will ever get a Dune movie made better would be to go the LotR route, and Dune is just not as popular a book in peoples minds.

Falconfire

The Day the Earth Stood Still is just fine as is, thank you very much. This one bugs me the most of the title son the list, simply because it is one of my all time favorite sci-fi films. I don't have much of an opinion on any of the other son the list, except maybe Dune but only because there hasn't been a satisfactory adaptation yet made. The Miniseries had a better story but the set design and costumes were shit.

My dream Dune movie has the aesthetic sensibility of the David Lynch with a bit of a tighter storyline than the miniseries. Maybe one day, with motion capture and digital effects someone could re-edit/ recreate the Lynch Dune but with the story intact? That'd work for me.

Gyrus
