I used to live just off O'Connell St in Dublin, and can report that St. Patrick's Day is in fact just a day to get ridiculously drunk. It was always fun avoiding the vomit on the doorstep the next day (but I was used to that as my route to work used to be through the tourist hellhole that is Temple Bar).

Oh, and one for the pedants in the house: St. Patrick's Day is actually Mar 15 this year for some strange religious reason, though the parades and stuff will still be on the 17th.

Too true, the first St. Patrick's Day parade in NYC was a civil rights march as the nativists of the time were no fans of the poor huddled masses, particularly the Irish ones.

I'm a Dub living in NYC 16yrs and I don't leave the house on 3/17 as it gives me agita.

I come from a long line of hard, Irish drinkers. But St. Patrick's day was for pride in all things Irish, not a day to get drunk. Erin go Brach!

Did you guys hire a 40 year old brit recently? You've gone from zero to some 2000ad references in a short period of time.

As for Irish stereotypes, most of the piss and puke stained visigoths cluttering up the bars and streets on March 17th tend to anything but Irish. We can hold our drink and don't need a special day to prove we can drink more than the rest of you.

That Emerald Isle Dredd story is not bad either. It's all about Americans trying to turn Ireland into a plastic paddy amusement park.

People take offense to Irish being stereotyped as drinkers?

Russians tend not to take offense when they're stereotyped as drinkers. Of course, it's easier to not be offended when you're drunk.
