Has Milla Jovovich played any other roll? Than badass possibly super-human chick? No, no she hasn't, her acting career is based firmly on someone writing movies with the premise "Super sexy, but super tough chick kicks asses in the post-atomic/future distopia/space." And she isn't even that great an actor. I don't even see movies with her in them after Resident Evil 2.

Also, less Will Smith? How dare you, I haven't seen any other people on this list who have gone from something as silly as Fresh Prince, to something as serious as I am Legend (even if that CG car and lions was really bad looking). Most of the other actors on this list don't have half a mind to play anything but the same role over and over (Milla cough! Summer cough!). Despite what could only be called a "shameless rape" of I, Robot. I think Will Smith has done nothing but good for sci-fi.

I went for the Heros stunt casting. But, each has there points:
1) Summer, the battle was of the [former] ballerinas: Serenity vs. Aeon Flux
2) Jeffrey's acting as the Andorian was what kept me watching the final season of Enterprise, so it's always good to have him around.
3) Last new movie I saw with her was '.45' with her getting smacked around by her gun-running boyfriend played by Angus Macfadyen, where she get to use her definite New York/New Jersey dialect. But, now I listen for it in her other movies so...for the trainspotters.
4) As for will, he's the only reason I didn't gouge out my eyes watching Independence Day, and he does show money can be made, as it was said that after Men in Black, Hitchhickers finally got the green light.

Others:
Vin Disel: as Riddick, Babylon AD for your SciFi epic fix.
Michelle Forbes: Star Trek and BSG (who was reluctant to go for BSG for fear of being typecast).
Or the supporting cast (ok, most anyone around Vancouver during filming):
Kandyse McClure: Dark Angel, Jeremiah, Smallville?, Andromeda BSG.

Just adding my voice to the chorus here, but I really didn't recognise Will Smith as being a sci-fi actor. He does seem to play a stock variation on the Will Smith character in [insert blockbuster here]. Maybe I'm using an overly narrow definition of sci-fi (or actor ;)? If those are the criteria wouldn't the Governator have qualified (were he was still in commission)? Keanu Reeves? Patrick Stewart on the big screen?

Mention of Starship Troopers above reminds me, I recently watched Scanners and I had to go wiki the ever-so-familiar antagonist: Michael Ironside. If there was a complementary "Which Underexposed Sci-Fi Actor Should We See More Of?" poll, I'd definitely vote for him.

Still I think some people probably wished he would have leapt out of Enterprise permanently, but he kinda grew on me over the course of the show.

Personally, I think Tom Cruise is someone I would like to see never do another Sci-Fi anything again.

I agree with the above posters, I never tire of Jeffrey Combs. I'd love to see more of him.

Same with Bruce Campbell, but he's also ubqiuitous.

I think Amy Acker has said in interviews she's done so many scifi roles that she joked to her old acting teacher he should be teaching a class in scifi roles.

Who's the guy I expect to be in random scifi movies (or used to be)? Sam Neil.

And voice acting is another category. Hardest working man in voice acting (scifi or not scifi)? Phil Lamarr. He's in EVERYTHING.

And Sandra Oh would be fantastic on BSG. It's a little disappointing that most people only know her through Grey's Anatomy.

I actually couldn't vote of any of these people. I don't care if someone is in more than one movie, I can actually separate the actor from the role. I really don't understand people who always see a certain actor in one role that made them who they were in their minds' eye.

And Eccleston is not a 'classic sci-fi actor' he's only had four sci-fi roles for fuck's sake. And all of those within the last 7 years. Unless you want to count his role as The Happy Mondays drug hook-up in 24 Hour Party People as sci-fi.

And it looks like he seems to be only getting more sci-fi roles, which is, well, disgusting tbh.

Oh look he was in ExistenZ, make that five roles. Oh wait, he was 'seminar leader'. I guess American films can only cast him in sci-fi roles, which again, is disgusting.

Lots of the actors in this pole have a huge range, but apparently Malcolm MacDowell is only good as the sci-fi villain in idiots' eyes.

What I really appreciate about Milla (aside from the obvious) is that she knows who butters her bread. Could she hold her own in mainstream Hollywood fare? Yeah probably, Will she? Probably not. She's now typecast, but rather than bitch about it (Tobey MacGuire I'm looking at you) she embraces it and we get good fun movies where the main character doesn't look like they're just doing it for a paycheck.

I must not be as big a sci-fi geek as I thought I was. The only "name" actor above that I actually know who you are talking about is Will Smith. And, really, I would put him in the same category as Bruce Willis. He has done as many non sci-fi movies as sci-fi in recent years.
However, I will agree that he is over-exposed and should take a break from all movies for while. Please no Bad Boys III, or Hitch II or anything.

Ultraviolet is one of the best action movies of all time. People poo-poo on the semblance of plot but that was never the point. It had the plot of a bad comic book. But it also had the crazy action of an awesome comic book. The maternal scenes between Violet and Six are underrated. She was as convincing of a mother as any in scifi, especially when she was threatening to kill him.

I don't know how people can malign Ultraviolet when on every level and in every minute it is ten times better than say, Elektra.

I concur with the others re: Milla J. Don't think I've even seen her in anything other than The Fifth Element and Resident Evil films. OK, she's no thespian but she does have presence. And her athleticism more than compensates for the modest dramatic range. While she'd be good in a non-SF action role, I hope she'll stick to the genre that suits her best.

I would have to say 1st off that i never ever want to see Milla Jovovich take time off... lol

After that i agree with JennaW in saying whats wrong with seeing those familiar faces working... especially if what they are doing is enjoyable.

I adore Milla and will watch her in anything science fiction-related. I think it's awesome that she does SF flicks and doesn't try to spin it as great art or Oscar roles, but simply as fun...

Plus. . .she put on 80 pounds with her pregnancy and ate things like beef marrow. How bad ass is that?

I'd love to see her face-off against Jason Statham.

@Macloserboy: As a Non-Benny New Jersian, I refuse to acknowledge Point Pleasant. But I have to agree w/you on that except for Starship Troopers. One of the best sex scenes in a movie in my view.

@JennaW: That's what I said to Charlie when she came up with this idea. I LIKE seeing Jeffrey Combs and Milla in scifi stuff all the time.

But at the same time, it would be nice to see new faces in scifi stuff too. So I say, swap Jeffrey Combs into The Shield once in a while (man he could chew scenery with the best of those guys), and take Sandra Oh out of the hideous Gray's Anatomy and put her in BSG.

I take issue with this premise. What's wrong with actors doing a lot of genre work? What's wrong with actors doing a lot of NON-genre work? If they aren't any good at it, then sure, but if they are, then what's the problem?

And yet I will watch at least 5 minutes of Ultraviolent whenever I click past it on cable. My brain is very thankful I didn't opt for the Starz/Encore pack when I switched to FIOS. It could only handle so much abuse.
