It would also give the much-anticipated nod to McGann, especially since it has been shown that the film is, indeed, canon in the new series. It would also be strangely appropriate, not only to cement the uniqueness, as it were, of the new show, but also to tie the new and the original firmer together (the film having begun with Sylvester McCoy, and all).

However, I seriously doubt RTD is going to go in that direction at all.

but how many other Dr. Who companions were as big of an entertaining train wreck as her?

I loved the "Donna" episode as it was very, very different from what you usually see in a companion. The only other companion to be anything close to her was "Ace" and she was pretty damn fun and removed from the normal as well.
