_Astro City_ is probably my favorite currently-publishing series, and I read a LOT of comics. Unfortunately, like _Watchmen_, I feel it only has "meaning" if you read superhero comics in the '60's and '70's since it uses many of those themes in a way that the reader is expected to be familiar with them.

Some of the early issues are just brilliant, such as one which discusses the "orgin" and "day in the life" of the Astro City version of Superman. And while I prefer the early issues, there has not been an issue that I'd rate below "very good", so you can't go wrong with any one that you pick up.

The best issue is # 1/2 (I think that's what they numbered it), which is a half-length story of the "ramification" of a Crisis-type event on an "everyman". I suspect that issue can make a good portion of its readers teary-eyed.

And as for superpets playing poker, that reminds me of that fun _Top-10_ issue with the super-mice and Crisis parody. And of course Cassius Marcellus Coolidge's 1903 series of paintings of dogs playing poker...

I had somehow never heard of this series, but I'm a huge Busiek fan. In fact, I've never not liked anything he has written. Plus, by all accounts he's a truly nice guy. I will make sure to check it out.
