Not quite the same thing. Sonic RPG is for the DS and is being made by BioWare's handheld division which was just started. I think it might even be the first game out of them. So, it makes sense that they are doing a licenced game for that one.

Ryan H

@PriorMarcus: i found lego star wars entertaining and the artistic style comedic but felt the gameplay was far to derivative of ratchet and clank to considering it the best star wars game ever. maybe it's unfair of me but i also have a hard time considering a game which borrows its overall plot from other media to be on a completely different level, indeed a lower level, than one that contains an original narrative.

tetracycloide

As for your question, I believe some Star Wars novelist guy wrote the script for the game. The level design has been talked about a bit, ie. enormous indoor spaces.
I'm pretty sure they're focusing on story and force powers and weapons are secondary to that, so you got me there...

But I have to agree with tk, the new engines are the most important part, so that's what they're going to focus on. And Euphoria is leaps and bounds ahead of anything we've seen yet, so why shouldn't they?

I should also note that I haven't owned any Star Wars games to date, save for LEGO Star Wars, so this will all be relatively new.

I can think of some counterexamples... the conversation engine of Mass Effect; the cover system of Gears of War; the crash physics of Burnout; the original Starfox being "3-D!"; everything about the Wii and the DS screams "gimmick". But all of those things turned out fine if not completely awesome.

The Force Unleashed looks really fun so far, I guess we'll find out soon. There have been too many awful SW games, though, that much is true.

tk.

@the earl of weaver:
@engtech:

Unfortunately, Bioware really, really unlikely to do another Star Wars game. They have said a bunch over the past few years that they are not very interested in working with other people's IP right now. So LucasArts would have to really sweet-talk them to get them to even consider it.

Now, THAT'S not going to happen because BioWare has a history of refusing to ship games until they are done. LucasArts' marketing doesn't like their developers telling them to piss off. It's one of the big issues that had LA give the licence for KOTOR II to another studio who was more under their thumb. And we all know THAT ended with the game being shipped three months before it was done.

Ryan H

Sorry for the double post, but I also want to adress this, namely, ask what you're seeing that I'm not.

They've been going on and on about the new physics engine. Oh, now AI will interact with physics! (Which seems to mean clutch to each other/objects like glue). But that's all I've heard about the project. Level design? Nah. In-depth combat? Nah. Weapon variety? Nah. I mean, essentially I've seen nothing but polished versions of the stuff I've been playing in say, Jedi Knights.

It always makes me nervous when a game company goes on and on about a single premise or gimmick in a game without touching on the greater whole of it. Every time I've seen a company do that, the game ended up horrible. (Hi there Red Faction!)

Evdor

@engtech:

Probably because Lucasarts division is, quite simply money-grubbing freaks. You have to get into their twisted little corporate mindset. Anything with Star Wars will sell, by name recoginition alone. A good Star Wars game will cost quite a bit more (though ultimately perhaps be rewarding) a bad or medicore star wars game will get slapped together and still rake.

Star Wars Battlefront is a perfect example. Make no mistake, the game is cheap. The engine is borrowed and there really wasn't all that much work done (Honestly, is it pretty? Do they even reach very far at a all? It wasn't even as good looking as the game that MADE its engine!) It still did extremely well due to the Star Wars liscense.

I would like to see a comparitive sales analysis between KoToR and something like that (or god help us, Star Wars Obi-wan), but I'd suspect it's not enough to justify the very large scale in cost to a company that does not seem to care about the quality of the game anymore.

But hey, I'm a bit bitter that they refuse to even touch X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter, so what do I know?

also yeah, a game about Smugglers, or Bounty Hunters would be a breath of fresh air. I think it's extremely telling that one of the best (non-KoToR) SW games that came was Republic Commando. So, so nice to play through a game without coming across a lightsaber at some point.

Evdor
