This movie is surprisingly bad, lacking in pretty much anything (dialogue, pacing, plot) that might make it bearable, but it does have one BRILLIANT scene in it. (Not plot = no spoiler!)

The evil bad guy wizard person is going after the other good guy wizard person who works in a warehouse in downtown LA, and he's walking down the street towards the warehouse, and there's this tiny little grandma lady tottering along opposite him. He gets to the big green iron gate where the good guy lives, and then kind of just walks through the gate, and you watch the little grandma lady just turn and try to walk right through the gate and bounce off. It's brilliant.

VoxExMachina

@codydog: Not only did his archetypes survive, but his influences as well. Superman has most of his origin story and his look thanks to John Carter (I believe Siegel and Shuster explicitly said they were influenced by Burroughs), and even Star Wars has some Barsoom in it: Princess Leia in gold bikini and chains? Pure Dejah Thoris.

@codydog:

I should mention that Burroughs, for you young guys, was a medium bad writer, who had the happy gift of creating archetypes that lasted for decades. Tarzan and John Carter of Mars created the heroic fantasy genre, and Conan was to some extent a reaction to John Carter's nobility of spirit and general wussyness.

I always liked "The Moon Maid," a minor work, but much better than the rest of the books. The first Tarzan is way cool, but they get formulaic after a while..

That's what you get for half a cent a word.

And now i read that Pixar is working on the John Carter of Mars project, so there is joy in the world.

codydog

the reason this movie sucked was the lack of plot for the villain (after all we sci-fi nerds love knowing what makes the bad guy tick)
and the fact that the dragon-snake was done to death.
in the end when the bad guy is revealing his dark god it turns out to be the same damn snake we've seen 20 times before.
I'm sorry but when they introduce the big dark god of evil i want to see a fresh and awesome harbinger of darkness not the same damn critter thats be chasing the hero around since the first 5 minutes of the film.

though its funny how at the end the power that makes a dragon celestial looks just like the smash ball from SSBB.

kadaj_sama

@dOk: I think you just proved my point.

I will tell you a secret, that has kept hack writers and film makers, musicians and cartoonist is business for centuries. "What ever you can sell to a 12 year old, will be loved by that person for the rest of their lives, no matter how horrible it actually is."

For example, i'm just to old to be influenced by "Speed Racer." to me, it's nada. But i had to go see "The Bullwinkle Movie" because i was programmed as an innocent child.

People who grew up on Star Wars or Star Trek will love it until they die. Same with the Harry Potter kids.

It does not matter that the best actors, i want to say the only real actors in Star Wars were Chewie, and R2D2. Don't matter, you're hooked.

Some kid who is ten now, and sees SW 1-6 in order might well love Jarjar, and wonder why the quality drops off so bad after III, and there is nothing to be done.

Suck it up. If they made a movie of Commander Cody, starring Ovaltine, i would have to go see it. And it would suck, because it was a lot better when i was ten.

Unfair to innocent youth, but that's how you ell the Coco Crispies.

codydog

@Sturm Truppen: Sorry, but you are probably working off of the D&D Winged and legged version, based off of some classic english depictions. The trouble is that there are multiple depictions of dragons throughout history, not to mention different cultures.

There never was a single agreed upon model for dragon, and considering it is mythological, we can't do DNA tests to verify what is really a dragon. Pick up a book of classic dragon stories, preferably the dark ages, as they were the most varied. There were snake-dragons that spewed poison, aquatic dragons, flying dragons, burrowing dragons. Pretty much anything large, lizardy, and physically impossible is a dragon.

So... enjoy the new name, Bob.

Ghede
