As Wikiepdia reports, 'The reason for their creation is unknown. The most common presumption is that they were constructed to provide employment during the economic recession following the Napoleonic Wars. If this is true then the tunnels may be the oldest known job creation scheme.'

I wonder if one of these ppls ever read that book and then decided to start digging. Interesting stuff though.
As far as I'm concerned, I like the idea that we're finally moving underground. Caves are amazing things. Being in one is sweet.
I recommend going spelunking if you ever have the chance. Just don't expect to be standing very often. Crawling around in a space that is 2ft by 2ft is the norm from what I've seen.

The thing was much bigger than any above ground version of the same. The baptismal was in an underground salt stream, and the main assembly was held up by columns of bedrock that must have been 40' in diameter.

Just when I was thinking it was the most religious place I had ever been, I started hearing the long echos of the monks' singing.
