its like what lurlen was saying...doing these horrible things, and if anything, going through possibly worse things, in order to survive

i read about that whole russian busting in and then raping the women before freeing them a few days ago...couldnt believe it.

the scariest thing about 28 days later is how plausible it seems to me. I read a little while ago that there apparently are diseases that can make you go totally batshit insane/pissed off. throw in the ability to transmit the diseases through blood, and make them lose all feeling of hunger, thirst, and their extremeties, and you have the virus from 28 days later.

the only good thing to be said is that instead of 28 days later, it would be more like > 4 days later. Food you can go without for a while. But liquids such as water? a few days and i dont care how angry you are, you're still dead.

jrghoull

I see it as contradictory because you are choosing to focus on the fact that the subjects at hand are "men", and specifically men, when I think the point is about "humans" with the films chosen. I just think your main statement is misleading: your chosen subject header. Because I don't see this as having to do with genitalia...

@Plague: The only place where I disagree with you is that you seem to think that your reading and mine are contradictory. But I'm saying that they both lead to the same kinds of conclusions. This is art man -- it's ambiguous. A movie can be about disease and be about maleness at the same time.

This movie is about a male stereotype: the male geek, who ignores his body and focuses on machines. He gets his "disease" because he refuses to deal with what his machines might do to his body. This is directly a result of his stereotypical dudeliness.

I agree there are many other movies that would have made this point better, and this was one of those posts where I kind of didn't really know what I wanted to argue until I was done with it and then I just said, "Ok fuck it good enough I'll publish." That's blogging for you. But I'll follow up with some more posts that more clearly deal with the horrors of guy-ness. I've got a good one I'm planning for tomorrow!

Annalee Newitz

@ggodo: I find the idea of banning him preposterous. He has a differing point of view from Annalee and he argued his ideas well.

The Fly has been well documented as being about the way that the body handles disease and not about "men going ape shit because they are men." If she could find some point in this film that backs that up then I'd be willing to consider her argument, but some vague idea of him being previously unaware of his body doesn't do it. The character couldve been a female and the plot would've remained the same.

The day that people get banned from this site for having a point of view which contrast with the editor is a sad one, especially when the first person to start throwing around phrases such as "get over it" and "dismissing comments as claptrap" was that editor themselves.

If Annalee wants to counter points made against her articles with "get over it" then maybe she should consider removing readers ability to comment entirely because otherwise she's going to get people try to rebuke her and expect discussion in return, it's how a discussion works. Discussion is what most people want from these comment sections.

And I don't see why it takes balls to debate with the editors, they are people too, prone to faults and able to make return points - we shouldn't fear being banned just because we have a differing opinion.

PriorMarcus

Getting "nowhere"? You practically said I was correct in your first response to what I wrote!
If my comments (based on interviews I have read with the filmmakers and other critical reviews) are "claptrap", then I'll just come out and say it: your entire post is based on nothing but a prejudged position you attempted to throw at us with NOTHING to back it up, as I and several others have shown.
You picked the wrong movies to try and prove your point. There are others, however, that would have worked just fine.

Plague

@It'stheRooo: @Kittentits:
Sorry, but there is a difference between drawing conclusions from the evidence presented by the films themselves and pulling bits and pieces to fit the conclusion you want to present. NEITHER of these two films had anything to do with men as "men". They had to do with the human race as a whole. Cronenberg has a long history of "body fear" in his films. The Fly was the best example of this taken to the extreme. He is not being "turned inside out". His body is revolting against him like a cancer and he is trying to grasp what it means to lose one's humanity. 28 Days later was a mish mosh of body fear and the fear of the loss of "safeness" that one has in today's society.
But hey, never the facts get in the way of your point of view, right, Jezebelites?

Plague

@pinafore: I'd argue that 28 Days Later' revelation of the true mindsets of the soldiers is one of the most forced and idiotic story techniques I've seen in the horror genre of the last years. The entire second half of the movie felt awkward and forced when compared to the themes and ideas portrayed in the first part.

I couldn't help but feel that the end half of 28 Days Later felt like the writer had sat down and deliberately set out to find the most disturbing ulterior motive for the soldiers - and for that reason, to me at least, it just felt underwhelming and poor.

Sexual assault and rape are two of the easiest ideas to insert into any script were a male presence is the majority in a lawless world, and because of that it often comes across as the worst. It's not that I don't find the subject horrible, it's that I found it so blatantly forced and lazy that it merely made the film itself seem horrible.

On the other hand a movie like Dawn of the Dead (1978) at least manages to maintain a consistent theme of society becoming more violent and dangerous through out the entirety of it's narrative progression. From the opening scenes it builds upon the ideas of survival bringing out the worst in people, and the end feels inevitable and fulfilling because of the establishment.

If 28 Days Later had ended at the half way point, or if it had changed the later half to be more in tune with the excellent first it would've been one of the best movies of all time, sadly it ended up being one of the biggest disappointments.

PriorMarcus

I kind of take Audrey II to be both the embodiment Seymour's repressed masculinity, AND a weird doppleganger for Audrey.

Have to agree with all the agreement about 28 Days Later. Definitely the most effective horror flick I've seen since "Henry: Portriat of a Serial Killer," which has nothing to do with sci-fi or vadges so it isn't topical here, for exactly the reasons mentioned. Not the zombies, but the reactions of the normal humans. One could say it was the desire for the vadge as oppposed to the fear of it that causes the movie to work, and also, the cause of me making the occasional fool of myself out at bars.

Im a people person.

annalee, you totally grasped what made 28 Days later such an intelligent horror film. a lot of dystopian plots allude to sexual violence as a consequence, but its done in this hashed casual way that no one really sees the horror of women hiding from it or fearing it. considering the film was directed and written by men; it was a pretty bold move. and one that required an unusually intuitive actor like cullian murphy to pull off.

pinafore

I saw 28 Days Later as being about how people lose it when societal order is taken away, which men tend to play into more violently. Look at the 1977 NYC blackouts. While the ending did have a Camp Kurtz flavor to it the soldiers, to me, were more desperate and probably a bit twisted from the loss of authority than brainwashed. The infected were a sort of catalyst for the really creepy (human) parts of the movie.

E0157H7

@Plague: I completely agree that The Fly is about dealing with disease. One of the things that's fascinating is watching Brundle become aware of his body, which he wasn't before when he was buried in his work with computers. I think your reading can fit with what I'm bumbling toward saying here, which is that The Fly is about a stereotypical nerd guy who is unaware of his body, who undergoes a transformation that forces him to become horribly aware of it. But part of the horror is that he got to this spot in the first place by not thinking through the impact his work might have on his body.

Annalee Newitz

Man, I don't even know how to say how wrong you are about "The Fly". It's about dealing with disease and how it changes your body and your "connection" with it. Brundle before is just an average person, living unaware of what he is. After, he goes so far as to "categorize" parts of himself, to attempt to keep part of his "self" as he was, because he is now "aware" of his decreasing humanity as the disease progresses. His being a man is just secondary, in my view. Sexuality is only brought up via the maggot baby, which again is a fear of the loss of "humanness".

As for 28 days later- it has to be one of the most overrated films of the last decade. Two movies grafted together very uncomfortably.

Plague
