How about some more subtle global disasters? Imagine that DARPA creates some kind of brain damaging or brain altering bio-weapon (Bacteria or viruses or something.) as way of trying to invent a perfect propaganda tool--you know, some weird plague that increases suggestibility or fanatical conviction or something.

But due to some vaguely explained "jumping gene" effect or something, the weapon gets out in the wild, changes and instead giving us a mild increase in gullibility and pliance in some target population gives two thirds of the world, irreversible amnesia or Alzheimers or schizophrenia. Civilization spirals rapidly out of control as half the world forgets how to work the gadgets and or descends into debilitating mental illness--real, sad and pathetic mental illness, not stupid slasher-flick, Silence of the Lambs stuff.

This is not, not, not, not to be treated like a Resident Evil plague of zombies thing. It more like a "What's So Bad About Feeling Good?" or "Looker" thing with a little PKD, MK-Ultra thrown in.

Sure it's a plague but I don't recall any recent movie treatments of plagues like I imagine. Not a whole bunch of explosions but it would take years for us to recover from it. Imagine if it was as tough to cure as AIDS?

They call it the "memory plague" or "Brain Zap" or something catchy.

I personally think Brian Keene's The Rising and Conqueror Worms would make great movies if Hollywood doesn't screw it up.

In The Rising scientists accidentally open a hole to the void where all the demons were sent, and they come back and possess any dead body, human or animal. We got zombie birds, lions, elephants, and FISH! And they're all intelligent and bent out on killing every single living being on the planet XD.

In The Conqueror Worms it starts raining all over the world for months nonstop. The rain starts driving things deep in the earth that have stayed hidden for centuries back to the surface. I won't go into too much detail, but come on... GIGANTIC KILLER WORMS!! How is that NOT cool?

Or maybe attack of millions of spiders! The whole world covered in spiderwebs!

All your ideas are interesting but I think I have the one of the most frightening ones: overpopulation

I see the trailer showing some common earthly activity and slowly adding more and more people to it to the point that you feel suffocated. The plot would basically revolve around either some villain/hero trying to maintain the population or perhaps an alien being eventually equalizing things? not sure how it would end but I think the things that are familiar can be quickly turned into a threat and that psychologically has more power in the mind.

A generational fleet of alien ships arrives and is horrified at out planet possessing a natural ecosystem. They demand that humanity completely obliterate the Earth's ecosystem within 100 years time or they will return and destroy all humanity.

The rub is, even though the humans cut down all the rainforests, burn them along with all the fossil fuel we can find, and dump as much waste both toxic and otherwise into the oceans, we are unable to do enough damage to the Earth to be allowed to live, and the aliens destroy us all.

But they take a few specimens first, who agree to breed like rabbits and eventually overthrow their alien overlords.

My demented psyche was formed as a child on (amongst others) a near-pornographic novel concerning nuclear war. It was called "Shelter" by Dan Ljoka and it concerned a scientist trapped in a fallout shelter with 20 women. You can follow the rabbit down the hole with its plot; it was a mix between "On The Beach" and "Caged Heat". Anyhow, the book made for great brain-searing images such as a dream the scientist has about his wife and child getting caught in the blast and seeing their eyes melt from their sockets as they scream for help from him.

Like I said, reading that as a 12 year old makes for some great therapy sessions.

They should just remake Soylent Green. It's got:
- Global warming
- Diminished natural resources caused by global warming and extreme over population
- Society crumbling as people riot for food
- Corporate greed and government cover-ups as we run factories that turn the dead into food for the living.

Tweak it so that the global warming and diminished resources are the result of a giant solar flare or something that happens to the Earth's core. Make Haliburton in charge of distributing the soylent green to the masses and you've got a modern tale.

Global warming that leads to lots of nasty mosquitoes and swamp gas that explodes and really intense molds and gators/snakes/feral animals and no real ability to grow traditional crops plus travel is essentially by canoe or bio-diesel/solar fan boats : like the abandonment of New Orleans meets Swamp Thing meets Mad Max...but everywhere.

The Apocalypse must be blamable on man, so that he may be forced to realize the evil of his ways and repent - vowing never to be so vile again as a species.

All the options listed have already been done (and doesn't Day After Tomorrow count as an ice age disaster movie as well as a global warming disaster movie?).

Grey goo or the like still has yet to make an appearance on the big screen. Rampant, runaway technology is the perfect apocalypse film in that it condemns technology as such - and man's hubris for thinking he can control it or anything else. What more could any apocalypse lover want in a film?
