What would be better, is if they spelled out the 'stick' in the TDTESS remake. Maybe if, Keanu threatned us with EMP pulses over the planet to throw us in the Dark Ages again. That might work.

But, it does mess with the notion of man's threat to other civilizations outside of Earth's, though.

NefariousNewt, I WAS really looking forward to this movie...not any more. I'm sick and tired of environmentalist propaganda. It doesn't even matter if there is global warming, the point of the original movie is getting man to come together and renounce violence. The reason Klaatu was shot in the first place was to illustrate the violence in man and why we needed to change...a theme the movie follows throughout. In this remake, what's the point? I might still see if I can tell it's not preachy but that's a big MIGHT.

In the original TDtESS, the aliens didn't care what humans do on Earth -- we could slaughter each other all we want. Their warning was that if we took our conflicts into space where we could threaten other civilizations, we'd be destroyed. Having Klaatu come down because he's concerned about the environment is changing the whole point of the movie.

@ManchuCandidate: Well, much as I might bemoan a re-make of a classic science fiction movie, if what Keanu says is true, it might be a classy update to the story. The problem is the writing. It cannot come off as preachy -- that will turn off audiences quite rapidly. And perhaps they got the right actor to tone down any preachiness; God knows Keanu has one tone, and simply modulates it.

Agh I didn't realise they were remaking the Day the Earth Stood Still! I can't imagine a way in which this, with Keanu Reaves, will EVER be good!

I still can't get excited about the new series of Doctor Who, putting Catherine Tate in it was a terrible decision the first time round. We don't need a whole series devoted to the harpy voiced harridan.

However it will be nice to see this Smallville series get an actual plot for the ending. So far this series has bounced around from Supergirl, to Green Arrow, to New And Improved Stride Sponsored Episode, to Bizarro Clark. So far there's been no story arc as far as I can see. Which has been a shame.
