I had to say that as a film, I prefer Serenity all-around. It's got a bit of something for everyone....

As a work of art, Blade Runner has it all over Serenity and seeing it on the big screen for the first time in my young, tender, life last year was a glorious experience. As I recall, I actually took the day off work to go (I had a tonne of overtime banked.)

Keep in mind though, that others will express their opinions as well...and you did just kind of pull the equivalent of walking in to a Republican convention, look at a picture of Reagan, and say, "Wow. Was he over-rated or what. Nice picture, though" (and please..it's just an analogy..not commentary).
We all have viewpoints that will occasionally veer from the mainstream. (I, for instance, think Asimov is just too long winded...but I digress).
Just keep make sure you've got asbestos undies and a sense of humor for the inevitable flame war. ;)

If I am recalling it correctly, every ship in the book was done by the same artist and had that almost blown apart look.

My guess at the time was that ships looked that way because there was no air resistance in space and parts were tacked on during interstellar journeys.

John Berkey is simply spectacular. There have been several artists since who have emulated his style (anyone care to help me compile a list of these artists?).

I know of two books that have published about Berkey: "Painted Space" published in 1991 (sadly out of print, but still available used), & "The Art of John Berkey" published in 2003 by Paper Tiger.

Both are excellent and worth adding to your library.

@Punty: I love to give people credit. But the first thing you said was "I hate Bladerunner." Which really isn't giving anyone credit. Also, one of my huge pet peeves is when someone's only reason for not liking something is because it's 'overrated.' Sure, you can despise the culture in which Transformers is one of the biggest blockbusters of the last year, but you don't hate Elvis Presley because 50 million people like him. You hate him because you think Carl Perkins or Hank Williams or Chuck berry sang all those songs better and without a useless drawl.

Now if you had reasons for not liking it, I'd've given you cred.

I also think the line works better as a description than as an actual image. It's just be so hard to capture. I love, though, that they never explain it. You can assume that he means he fought in a battle off the shoulder of Orion, but really, the shoulder of Orion is a star, vaguely in a nebula, no? So would there be a battle there, or would he be looking across space and seeing some unknown space battle through a telescope? Who knows, who cares, it's a great line.
