He'll finally become the full blown Fascist-Vigilante he's been sneaking up on all of these years. I really, really hope that Stephanie is Dead and stays DEAD! War Games, while I know wasn't viewed as that great by others, I LOVED, because it felt a bit more like what Batman would REALLY be dealing with if he ruled a city. Gangs, power vacuums and stupid police effing up his shit. Also, that perspective change that Morrison is dealing with right now, as it is GM is brilliant. I wrote a little essay last year that seems to be somewhat along the same lines. I argued that Batman was in need of some major ideological restructuring for the 21st century if he was going to continue to be an interesting character. He needs a flaw, a major one, that he is incapable of "Shark Repellent Spraying" Away. Like a mental condition, SPLIT PERSONALITIES ANYONE? (Seems like all of my good ideas are stolen by GrantMorrison before I've even read em. ! guess I need to start working that pen a little faster.) Fortunately for comics fans, unfortunate for DC and MARVEL, the comics industry is exploding right now! (I finally have a JOB! YAY!) But the newer fans are more drawn to Speculative Fiction (DMZ, Y: The Last Man, Walking Dead, Casanova, Ex Machina) Than the super hero stuff. And as long as these Legacy characters continue to be broadly written and without stories with unalterable consequences, they will continue to see their properties decline (until the next movie of course). On that note, I think that the death of The Batman, could do much more for the franchise than his continuing life, but could just as easily create a Crisis only a Zero Hour could repair (or destroy further).

And I doubt they're killing off Batman. For such a major rumor to have been circulating since the Fall, no one is doing much of anything to propagate it. Technically, they already killed Batman in the books. His heart stopped completely and he was revived by the dude torturing him. From what I understand, Grant Morrison is deconstructing the Batman character and exploring him from a different perspective. If that is still in the cards, then there's no point in killing off the character so soon.

re: Nightwing and why he can't be Batman, this is the same Nightwing that DC was considering to have die at the of the last Crisis (but that lawsuit over the Superboy name helped them decide). DC editors have stated for a while that they don't know what to do with Dick Grayson, and it's not like his books sell extremely well. Turning him into Batman would actually be far more logical than Tim - especially since Dick has already been Batman.

Then again, I'm happy with things so long as the new Batman isn't Jason Todd...

Where at some point a bunch of crazy religious types obsessed with greek mythology create FTL and start 12 colonies near Gemini and Virgo, full of other Greek Cultists and invent a race a Terminators that go all Arnie on your ass.

They have talked about this in several of the Bat-Family books. Nightwing has established his own identity, and has no interest in becoming Batman. Robin, is the chosen replacement. And if you want to take into account the "Titans of the Future" possible future, that is how it ends up being.

That being said, I don't see Bruce going away for any extended length of time. He sells better than Captain America has over the long term, so it would be a bigger risk to several ongoing books for DC to take out Bruce Wayne for a long time, and lose Robin from his own series and from Titans.

I'm very patient with comics, and I accept the cyclical nature of the primary characters' story arcs, but seriously... Can't they *just* tell some good stories? Do they *constantly* have to kill people off for dramatic effect? They managed to just tell stories in the past, but now Shocking Death(TM) is the only thing they seem to be able to come up with to add drama.
