@femto: I've given up on a DRoP movie or tv series (same as I've given up on Enders Game). Four times it's been licensed for a screen adaptation, and all four times the project has fallen apart because the producers wanted to change too much.
While DragonFlight and DragonQuest would both make excellent films, the later novels wouldn't play out well on their own.

I bought a Dreamcast specifically so that I could play the DragonRiders adventure game. The gameplay sucked, but I loved it all the same.

Chiper

DragonSlayer I'd say is a classic and was the best dragon movie before RoF. It had its corny moments, but over all they did an amazing job with the special effects avaiable at the time. It was also a well done, triumphal hero story.

Wow, no one mentioned Jane Yolen's Pit Dragon series yet? On the planet Austar, I believe it was called, an oppressed populace of mostly indentured servants lightens their dreary lives by watching their favorite blood sport, gladiatorial contests between trained fighting dragons who have a telepathic bond with their coaches (who use the familiar form of address "Thee" when speaking to their dragons as a sign of intimacy). All the female dragons had "Heart" in their name (there may have even been a Heart of Gold), and all the males had "Blood" (like Bloody Flag and Blood Brother -- those two names stuck in my head). Our young hero, who works at -- really, belongs to -- a dragon farm, steals an unhatched egg and raises it in secret to be a fighting champion, hoping to earn his freedom.

What with all the fantasy dragons in a sci-fi world, egg hatching drama, and telepathic human-dragon companionship, it was like a dark mirror Pern. I loved it. I should really read the series again sometime, I haven't since I was a kid...

bluewyvern

Everything else I have seen since all the way up to D-War has never seemed quite as epic as that one (perhaps because it was a CG free design, i'm not sure).

if someone mentioned it already sorry, there's a lot of comments on this thread that i just skipped....what about Dragon Slayer?? so it's fantasy - so is reign of fire. much more than it is sci-fi.

besides everything that made the dragons of RoF cool was already done in DS. except DS was cooler. way cooler. it had scale and grandeur which RoF lacked. (i've seen RoF 4 times so i'm quite familiar with it.) i'm not sure how this film slipped off the rails.

I think Heinlein's "Star Beast" and Foster's Pip and Flinx stories count as science fiction stories about dragons - if Pip counts a mini-dragon. As I recall these were pleasant YA stories.

Swanwick's "Iron Dragon's Daughter" is a mutant hybrid of Fantasy and Science Fiction but as I recall, the dragons are not main characters. This is a bit of a cheat, but it was not your standard Fantasy - it was really different, with lots of technology, and very dark.

Citing Zelanzy's "Creatures of Light and Darkness" is a much bigger cheat. This is another one of those hybrids of science fiction and fantasy that Zelazny was so fond of. I loved this story. I always pictured the "Nameless" beast of the story as a huge shape changing dragon but maybe it was actually more of a giant snake. Anyone remember?

atfon

I loved how the sci-fi tie-in was so artfully done in the Pern series - I remember that I was eleven when 'Dragonsdawn' came out with the big reveal, and I totally wasn't expecting it. Doubly excellent, because at that age I was starting to get the feeling that fantasy was lame compared to sci-fi. Awesome! They weren't medieval dragons after all, just genetically engineered mutated flying lizards! And genetically mutated by a wise old Japanese lady at that! Because we all know that the Japanese are from the future. Which brings us all the way back to Godzilla.

zorazero

So, yes, in a way, dinosaurs and dragons are related.
Again, that was hilarious!

Bob_of_Mars

In the trailer they said that the dragons went from 1-1 million+ in over a year. So, they grew large enough numbers to be a threat, started killing and destroying everything, more were born, etc. etc. Also, the dragons don't all amass in one place like an army, so they would have to be killed off one by one, meaning the military would be strewn out rather thin trying to take them out. Only in cities would they be in large numbers, and in that kind of terrain, they would have the advantage, because A: they kill everyone and destroy everything, the military would try to save people and buildings as much as possible, and B. because they are more maneuverable than any human built machines. So, there you have it.

Bob_of_Mars

Weak, weak, weak, dood! Dinos as dragons? That is not just a stretch; it is totally wrong. Dinos are the "dragons that evolution gave us"? That almost makes it sound like you're making reality fit fantasy. (Yes, dragons are pure fantasy, obviously. Unlike dinosaurs. Huh, who knew? Not io9, apparently.) Science fiction is about possible realities -- even remotely possible -- not about a mishmash of fairy tales thrown in just for kicks. Fantasy has its place, sure, but as an example, you can't throw Elves from a fantastic past into the genetic engineering broth of today/the future. That wouldn't be SF. Repeat after me: a T-Rex is a dino is a dino is a dino ...

MarsFlyer

And what about the Dragon Masters series by Jack Vance, where the dragons were sentient and bred humans to be various sub-species of warrior, so the humans returned the favor and bred captured dragons into Termigants, Blue Murderers and (my personal favorite) Juggers?
Run-on sentence aside, this is an early "dragons from genetic manipulation" story that certainly deserves mention.

SavannahJack

"It's hinted that long ago, the humans crash-landed their spaceships on Pern and never left."

It is a lot more than hinted, it is explicitly said. The novel Dragonsdawn (1988) describes the landing on the planet.

wyst

I'd add the dragons from the otherwise execrable "Dragon Storm," which airs frequently on Sci-Fi. Despite the usual trappings of Sci-Fi productions (Eastern European locations, "kingdoms" of about a dozen people, and a hero who's supposed to be a woodsman but holds a bow and arrow like a spoiled rich girl afraid of breaking a nail), the CGI dragons are freakin' first rate. I always suspected the effects animators put a lot of their own time into these, because they're cool way beyond the call of duty.

ruadan63

I don't think those last two count. They are explicitly dinosaurs. Now, while dinosaurs are their own breed of kick-ass, they are not dragons. I think the prerequisite to be a dragon includes at least flight or fire breathing.

Besides, Old lace is specifically identified as a psychic deinonychus.

Ryan H
