@bonniegrrl: I was thinking the same thing about "That '80s Show", but the show's appeal is more a function of how much time has passed since the era rather than the era itself (and also presumably other factors such as the quantity of Gene Hunt: you will notice that "That '80s Show" had no traceable amount).

It's been a good half-decade since "That '80s Show" failed, are we ready for an '80s spinoff series yet?

femto

"Today, my friend, your diary entry will read: took a prozzie hostage and was shot by three armed bastards" - DCI Gene Hunt

There might be a little confusion about Life on Mars' US air date because they have announced a US remake of the series. So, the BBC version has already shown (and I'd advise anyone interested to download/buy DVDs. All the BBC shows in America have to be cut down to add commercials. It does unspeakable things to the best series) but the US version is still in pre-production.

Ryan H

life on Mars was brilliant. ashes to ashes - seemed more of a pastiche. too be fair i haven't watched it as much as the former. i felt it was more a vehicle for the Gene Hunt character. maybe Hunt wouldn't be valid for his own series, so a similar time travelling is used to support? Golden Years - for a late eighties version, I think, yuppies and the money grabbing greed of thatcherism.

nha

@CSX321: Ahh, I just got BBC America, so hadn't realized that it had aired already, sweet.

@genehuntlover: I agree, I don't think the point of the show was "How does all this time travel wackiness work anyway?" I don't think we got those answers anyway, and I am glad about that.

I think the finale of LoM had an ending, but it didn't have the resolution we were expecting. Logically, because of all the crap he knows about, it makes the most sense if Sam was just a nutter in a coma. However the way the finale ends, and his return to the '70s, which through the course of the show became more important to him, left things open to interpretation. Take the episode with the organized crime lord he gets sent to the asylum. In the 'present' day the guy shows up to try and kill Sam in his hospital bed. Unless that was an insane coincidence (or I suppose Sam could have retroactively created the events of the episode after he was attacked) it seems clear that he was, in fact, in the 1970s.

The story could go one of three ways, and I think that is what made it so awesome.

ElijahDProphet

There were not the answers that a lot of people expected at the end of LoM, but I didn't feel like the focus is about answers.

I loved Life on Mars, what a fantastic show. I agree whole heartedly with eirenicon, John Simm was brilliant.
That being said, I actually like Ashes to Ashes. Worth a download, if you ask me.

RileyBolen

Also, I did not realize Ashes to Ashes has started yet, I will be making a visit to the torrentosphere after work to catch up. As long as Gene Hunt is still a right bastard I will watch it.

ElijahDProphet

Actually in Life On Mars Sam Tyler is hit by a car and wakes up in the '70s.

I also am not inclined to agree that the finale of Mars answered any questions regarding the technicalities of his apparent time travel, but since the show hasn't aired in the US yet I will avoid spoiler filled discussion of it here.

ElijahDProphet
