Why desire to keep our GENERA definitons pure unless the mixing of "bloodlines" is what is at stake? in my experience, a "pure" genre text is a rare as a "pure" racial specimen --and as useless. it is the hybrids that raise teh stakes of genres, who strengthen their generic protocols by becoming chimeras. ]]> <![CDATA[More Monstery Goodness in New Hellboy II Trailer]]> So I saw Mignola speak at the ICA in Boston last night. They showed the full trailer there. Due to a Mac problem (aka 'Its volume was turned down') we didn't have any sound for the first part.

But who really cares about sound with all those visuals? Besides, they got the sound working in time to hear Ron Perlman say, "Oh, crap."

Mignola talked a bit about the Big Green Monster you see in the trailer. He says that the studio didn't want it in the film because its effects would cost "like a billion dollars" so they sent him in to try and talk Del Toro out of it. So Mignola goes, tries, and comes back to the execs saying, "Yeah, about that monster you wanted pulled... we sort just wrote another scene for it."

He also talked about some of the design elements from the first movie, like how Del Toro has a (un)healthy obsession with "spinning things that shoot smoke out of it" - for example, the Apocalypse Clock from the end of the movie (big planet spinny thing with and angel and a key that shot smoke). Also, he said how the stock that Hellboy is trapped in at the end of the movie almost killed Ron Perlman. That thing was pretty heavy and someone forgot to secure it correctly, so when Ron tried to thrash about, he fell over and almost broke his neck.

It was a good talk! Woo! Signed Screw On Head! Signed Baltimore! There's a Mignola-drawn graphic novel of various and arcane origin in the works!

Case in point, Hellboy. If I call Hellboy a demon from Hell magically summoned to Earth in order to release an imprisoned god, it's fantasy. If, on the other hand, I described him as an extradimensional traveller with a unique physiology who came to Earth as a product of Nazi technology in order to enable another extradimensional being in a prison dimension access to Earth, it's Sci-fi. In fact, both descriptions are true, and arbitrary distinctions are being made to classify it based on quibbling details.

Is it really that terribly important whether pseudoscience or the arcane are driving a movie?

Frankly, Sci-fi and Fantasy are the same to me. I've never heard a compelling reason the two need to be distinct.

Personally and offered constructively, I think your mission of expanding the genre is being pursued in the wrong direction. Instead of trying to redefine the mainstream and other creations as science fiction, I would try to bring the science fiction purists to the mainstream and other genres... introduce the uninitiated to the conventional that can be found within scifi. (Because most often science fiction is its own worst enemy.)

Instead of saying "you'll like this because it's scifi," say "scifi fans will like this even though it's not scifi." (Expanding the base of content for the scifi fanatics). Instead of saying to the non-scifi audience, "that movie/book you liked is secretly science fiction, you just didn't know it," initiate them to scifi by saying, "you'll like this science fiction movie/book because at its heart its a compelling story with important themes you may be interested in..." These seem healthier strategies than trying to appropriate and exclude subjectively approved material.

When I hear scifi fans selectively saying fantasy with guns, space gods, or insects is good and counts as scifi, but fantasy with demons, unicorns, or magical artifacts is bad and doesn't count... or superheroes but not wizards... or exclude that entire genre but we'll make an exception for two or three authors... or literary techniques that predate science fiction are now actually a subgenre of scifi... or truly bad science fiction being better than anything outside the genre (not something that any of the io9 editors are guilty of, but common enough amongst scifi fans -- and sometimes suggested by io9 in relation to fantasy)... I can appreciate why the majority doesn't care for, maybe even actively dislike and mock, science fiction.

I'm a firm believer that magic could be the same thing as science, if anybody ever got it to work. The raft of quantum mechanics and theoretical physics books that delve into mysticism and religion seems to bear this out. So my question is, where would the you fall on the genre and io9 worthiness (if not the quality) of supernatural fiction based in present or future? Movies like Hellboy seem to fit, what about books like Dresden Files and that ilk? I know it's a stretch but if I don't open the box, I won't know what happened to the cat.

Sometimes those slip in as well, especially in the muddled world of comics. But that's not what I see our mission as. I'm only speaking for myself here, though.

This one's aspect ratio is off and the sound is brutal. Other videos have problems with framerate. I suggest you guys click through the link for a better quality version and an intro from Del Toro.

As for the movie, it looks great. Del Toro seems to like putting eyes on everything but the head. It's a shame David Hyde Pierce isn't voicing Abe this time around. I always thought it was weird he was uncredited for the first movie, espiecally considering how unique a voice he has. It adds a bit of sophistication to the character and is generally a better fit than the voice(actor) they seem to have for the sequel.
