@What is a man?: According to a very long interview with Lucas that I read several months ago, it makes sense.
The inspiration for Raiders, and by extension the two sequels, was, as you probably know, the matinée serials of the thirties. Lucas and Spielberg consciously emulated those films and that whole "genre" (one of the reasons I accept Temple, because it really reminds me of a lot of that crap - some of which is public domain that you can download for free at the Internet Archives ([www.archive.org]).
With Indy 4 being set in the 50's, they decided it would be wrong to extend that emulation into a decade where that genre was completely dead, and instead chose to emulate the pop-cultural film trend of the 50's - (I can't think of anything other to call them than) B-movies. A lot of these had decidedly Sci-fi-ish bents, so I guess it's reasonable to consider Crystal Skull sci-fi if it's true.
(I should add that so far I have seen no traces of anything remotely sci-fi in the promo material, but then again, I'm not really fussed if it's sci-fi or not, as long as it's Indy).

@Jim (The Canuck One): With all the other spoilers regarding Donna's character development and Rose and Martha, it seems like a very believable rumour (the one about Rose being in all four specials not so much). I can't wait to them to really get into Donnas character arch!

Am I the only person who liked Donna from the get-go? I'd be really sad to see her go, I think she's a nice change of pace as far as companions go for the new series. Granted, we've had all of three and a half (Astrid sort of counts!), but still.

I'm betting the villain in The Happening is Bruce Willis, who's already dead and is just trying to burry a nuke in the heart of the Earth in order to save his ex from a building... in space.

@Log1c: Sure, the story underpinnings are supernatural, but the meat of the series has always felt adventure-like to me. Just my take. :) I admit I'm not versed in what a genre is truly defined by though (i.e. plot versus presentation).

re: Donna's death. Anyone who's read my review of her Xmas special or even listened to me babble before the season started will be surprised: I'd be sorry to see Donna die.

Once again, I've been lulled into a grudging respect for a narsty character by rock-solid acting. I confess I'd seen little of Tate and I don't always agree with her comedy choices.

In the last episode, I feel she's proven she can be subtle and capable of producing a 3-dimensional character. She's showing the vulnerable (and smart) side of Donna.

@DSTRYA: I've been curious why people are referring to the latest Indy as "sci-fi instead of fantasy" as well. Just including aliens somewhere (as background or not) != sci-fi in my book. Though, truth be told, I'd consider the Indy movies to be "adventure" genre movies, like The Mummy or King's Solomon's Mines more than anything anyway.

...and does "Indy and His Post-War Nostalgia" count as scifi just b/c it has Lucas/Spielberk at the helm? i guess the phantom presence of aliens counts. i've been trying to avoid these genre wars but there's nothing even vaguely SF about any of those films-- if anything, they consistently debunk rationality and speculation in favor of Angels, Judeo-Christian magic, and some kind of white anixiety about "voodoo" and aboriginal demonism. i do love Raiders so very much, but this thing smells like it has THE LUCAS'S sweaty hands all over it.
