Likewise the Butterfly Effect mentioned above, when I saw it in the movies it ended with the self strangling fetus scene, which was silly, but also creepy as hell and seriously freaked out my pregnant wife at the time :p

So do all American endings get neutered like this!?!?

Has someone compiled a list about this?

It's a great low-budget flick from the early-to-mid '90s, with a great social commentary, but the theatrical ending carried a fraction of the impact that the "alternate" ending on the DVD had.

Gotta love it when a film includes an indictment of the audience watching it.

@Dunny0: wearing Chucks with a tuxedo is totally different than wearing a baseball cap. See, one wears shoes w/ a tux anyway, so you are still maintaining the Spirit of the Thing, and not detracting from the daughter's evening wear & special night. Baseball caps, however, are not meant to be worn indoors. Hence, not appropriate for evening wear. The Chucks have been rocked with suits for awhile (see for instance the cover of Blondie,Parallel Lines).

Most importantly, baseball-hats-as-fashion is really the stuff of children, unless you're a pro-baller or doing yard work. sorry, my nerdy Charlies: baseball hats get put in the closet when you turn 25. They're for little girls and boys. A-and if the young man in question doesn't have the decency & respect for my daughter to observe etiquette and dress like a Man when he picks her up, then he will be turned away from my door.

@extracrispy: Wouldn't say it sucked, might say it was overrated. I didn't really like most of the principal characters, and my suspension of disbelief suffered at various points. I'd probably have hated The Blair Witch Project, though, of which Cloverfield seems reminiscent.

IMO, it was an interesting take on how to do monster movies. Shaky cam made me sick in the theater, it probably didn't help that my blood sugar was low... Other than the alternate endings, does the DVD have any interesting extras... maybe something that I don't know, explains what the hell was really going on? I know what happened, but I want to know "what happened" if you catch my drift.

IT never came out on HD DVD, but was on a long list of great films that were supposed to be HD/DVD that I'm sure had a lot of people working on the transfers who had a really bad day that started with the phrase. "What do you mean, DEAD?!"

So don't go looking for it and keep your 360 seperated from your precious PS3. Getting those two together would be like sending your virgin daughter off to prom with a guy who's wearing a baseball cap with his tux.

That DVD came with two very different versions. The non-theatrical one dealt a lot more with how the main character's father had the same abilities, and the ending was completely different.

Rather than watching a video of that party and telling the little girl he hated her and never wanted to see her again, he watches a video of his own birth. Then, as a fetus, he strangles himself with his umbilical cord. Something that has apparently happened to the mother repeatedly in the past. It's a much darker end to the character, and kind of silly.

I agree the "alternate endings" were a letdown. Color me clueless but I don't "get" how the posted alt1 "seems to spell things out a bit more." And the flash of the camera being dug out in alt2 was no real biggie, though I did wonder exactly how much time had passed since the explosion and discovery. Do batteries run that long? And who hit pause/resume?
