@designguybrown: A few centuries ago, Sweden annexed Finland, along with the Baltic states, parts of Poland, and other bits and pieces, to make the Baltic Sea completely Swedish territory. Although that dream didn't last long, Sweden held Finland for at least a hundred years, until Russia occupied Finland.

If I recall correctly, Sweden's occupation was fairly friendly, letting the Finns keep some autonomity, while the Russian occupation really was that, disbanding the government and all. I could be wrong though.

Parts of Finland are still Swedish-speaking, mainly the south-western part and the island Åland. Swedish language classes were mandatory in school some thirty/forty years ago and road signs in major cities were in both languages at least until a few years back.

So, if they felt oppressed, they seem to have taken it well. They actually seem quite friendly nowadays.
