But Speed Racer? I've seen it twice now (I never do that) with the second round driving 45 minutes to see it in IMAX. I absolutely loved the film! My wife says it was even better the second time and wants to get the DVD just to be able to see some of the individual frames. I'll probably buy a Blu-Ray player just because of this film.

Too bad the early reviewers didn't get it. I've seen so many negative comments from people that haven't actually seen it. It's a great film destined to be a cult classic.

In short, I enjoyed it in the deserted theater. I haven't seen too many episodes of the original---couldn't stand the dub of Speedyoumustnotentertherace!!!!!!---but it seemed very true to the source style and that made all the difference. Having Christina Ricci to eye every so often didn't hurt, either. I said to myself at one point, This is F-Zero on the big screen, and I love it.

The lone kid in the theater went out a couple of times, and I was surprised at the length of the film. That being said, I'll probably buy the DVD and I'll go looking for a 1:24 Mach 5 to stick on a shelf somewhere. Go, go, go.

LoTR is chock full of homoeroticism, but not much camp. Speed Racer from your description is chock full of camp, but not that much homoeroticism. You can also be camp without being "gay" or "too gay" (I'd say Planet Terror from Grindhouse fits that bill). As for Speed Racer, I thought the movie was really fun except for the parts that dragged a bit. The expectation was that older fans would bring their kids to see the movie, but few people have a strong nostalgia for the series. Despite the reveal of Racer X as Rex Racer being one of TV Guide's most memorable moments in TV history, it wasn't a very strong show - not to mention the dubbing probably made it hard for people to want to retain fond memories of it.

I expect the movie to live on with a fairly decent cult following. Not only does this make for a fun midnight movie, I'm looking forward to people redubbing the movie with lines from the TV show or simply playing the movie at 1.5x speed. C'mon, given the show's infamously fast-paced (and horrid) dub, I don't get why they allowed Emile Hirsch to plod through his lines like he did. "Racing's the only thing I know how to do . . . and I gotta do something." Yeah, no.

I think the word you are looking for is camp, which is exactly what this movie is and camp is often associated with gay culture. I was expecting the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence to make a cameo at any moment.

On another note, I really enjoyed Speed Racer so much that I'm going to go watch it at the theater (my first viewing was a cam torrent) while I cannot say the same for Iron Man (also a cam torrent), which, while fun, wasn't memorable in that there are already several similarly styled testosterone laden cool techno-gear movies. Speed Racer was iconoclastic and, I think, will stand the test of time. The Bros. did a great job at translating a cartoon into live action while still maintaining a very cartoony vibe. I also think Speed was such a unique movie that it put people off because most movie goers want to watch something they are familiar with as opposed to something that twists and bends concepts they prefer to remain static.

Maybe it's not as much a problem with SPEED RACER, perhaps it's something right with IRON MAN.

Remember, we are at war! During WW2, the theaters were full of war pics showing America at it's best fighting the enemy. The American citizen wanted and needed them. They wanted movies showcasing real and fictitious heroes that the people could believe in.

Most of you on this blog are too young to remember but a country at war wants and needs movies like that for reassurance and comfort during times of uncertainty and fear of loss of family and loved ones.

War films with a positive message give us hope and a sense of pride in our country that is sorely lacking today.

Whether you agree with the mission or not, they are our sons and daughters and we love them. It's nice to see them portrayed in the best light.

IRON MAN does that.

I went in expecting candy-colored neon meth liberally sprinkled with crack and got it in spades, but I found it surprisingly moving at parts - specifically, Mom telling Speed why she loves to watch him drive, the flashback to the report of Rex's accident, and Pops telling Speed that he doesn't want to repeat the mistakes he made with Rex.

That said, the end of the climactic Grand Prix race? Most obvious sexual metaphor since Luke Skywalker shot down the Death Star.
